Tutoring Programs

Tutoring in Metuchen & Edison New Jersey

School Doesn’t Have To Be A Burden.

Let us take on the extra teaching this year.

What types of tutoring do you provide?

We provide tutoring in reading and writing, math, test prep, and homework help. We also provide specialized reading instruction using the Orton-Gillingham Approach.  Additional tutoring is available upon request.

What kinds of programs do you provide?

At Dr. Lopez Tutoring, your child will never receive a one-size-fits-all program.  We will never follow a set scope and sequence or grade level curriculum.  Instead, we provide personalized programs designed to meet the individual needs of each student.

Do you provide one-on-one or small group tutoring?

We feel that personalized programs provide the greatest benefit for students.  That is the focus of Dr. Lopez Tutoring.  At parent request, we can provide semi-private or small group classes.  Contact us for details.

Do you provide tutoring for struggling or gifted students?

Dr. Lopez Tutoring teaches students with a wide range of skills and abilities. We design each program specifically to meet the needs of each individual student.  We do not begin on a fixed starting point or follow a predetermined scope and sequence.  Each program is specifically created for your child.

What are your qualifications to teach my child?

Dr. Lopez and her tutors are experts in teaching your child.  Our certifications include Reading Specialist, Special Education Teacher, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Orton Gillingham.  We have advanced degrees up to the doctoral level and are constantly continuing in our studies to provide the best possible instruction for your child.

What do you teach in your reading sessions?

We focus on the five core areas of reading instruction:  phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

What do you teach in your Orton Gillingham Approach tutoring sessions?

We provide a program that is direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive.   The focus is on reading, writing, and spelling.

What do you teach in your writing classes?

We focus on the process of writing.  We discuss a variety of writing formats from narratives, how-to’s, to expository essays.  Additionally, we focus on the foundational skills needed to be a strong writer.  This involves morphology – the study of prefixes, roots, and suffixes – and basic vocabulary.  It also involves grammar and syntax.

What do you teach in your math classes?

We provide instruction in math from foundational math skills through algebra to calculus.  As with reading, we utilize a multisensory approach to math instruction to allow students to effectively master these skills.

Do you provide any other programs beyond tutoring?

Yes.  We understand that children are the center of families.  Families may need support to negotiate with your school and district.  We can advise on appropriate programs, teaching methods, and related services that can meet your child’s individual needs.  We can also participate in the development and review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

How long have you been a teacher, Dr. Lopez?

I have been a teacher for over 20 years.  Information about my degrees and certifications is available on the About Dr. Lopez page.
